PCOS is defined as a disorder of ovulation which affects the menstrual cycle. The majority of women have insulin resistance and elevated insulin levels. The ovaries are much larger with multiple rows of cysts covered with a thick waxy outer coating. These cysts produce male hormones called androgens. Androgens block follicular development and cause the follicles to degenerate preventing the release of mature eggs. In Chinese medicine, it is both an excess and deficient condition and the organs involved are spleen, kidney and liver. There are different syndromes involved based on a patients case history and a treatment plan is devised treating the cause whether it is kidney, spleen or liver syndromes. Chinese medicine and acupuncture promote ovulation, improves egg quality and supports conception and prevents a miscarriage when a pregnancy is achieved. Dietary changes would be recommended i.e. cutting out all forms of refined sugar and carbohydrates.
